Lidoderm Patch can be PROVE FATAL to a Child
Lidoderm Patch (lidocaine patch 5%) is a new topically applied form of lidocaine approved for post-herpetic neuralgia. Each patch contains 700 mg of lidocaine. The drug carries strong warnings on the label against accidental ingestion by children and pets. Even a used patch contains at least 665 mg of lidocaine, of which 200 mg is orally absorbable. In a child, it is possible that this could produce therapeutic and toxic plasma levels. Chewing a new or used patch may prove fatal to a small child. Health care staff and patients should be instructed to dispose of patches properly and to keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
