Q:

What drugs can I take to relieve the pain of Shingles?

A:

There are essentially four types of pain killers used to make shingles pain more tolerable:

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, and other steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, (NSAIDA for short).
  • Acetominoophen, of which the best know is Tylenol.
  • Narcotics, also known as opioids
  • Corticosteroids, sometimes called simply "steroids"

Aspirin and ibuprofen seem to affect the perception of pain in the central nervous system.

Also, some over the counter foumulations, such as Excedrin, contain both acetominophen and aspirin.
